Vertical Mice

One of the problems with a standard mouse is that the wrist must be turned to a palm down (pronated) position in order to manipulate the mouse. This posture must be maintained while the mouse buttons are being clicked, adding to the stress on the wrist. A vertical mouse is built to completely eliminate pronation. To operate a vertical mouse the hand is held in the "handshake" position, which greatly reduces wrist stress.

Many vertical mice are built for either the left or right hand. So for these models, if you want to switch hands while operating you would require both a left and right handed version. Some models are "ambidextrous" and can be used by either the left or right hand without the need to purchase two models. To see ambidextrous models click here.

Mouse pad alternative: Due to the different orientation of your hand, a vertical mouse can be a little awkward at first. Using a Wow!Pad Microthin Mousing Surface can really help in the adjustment to vertical mousing.

OrthoMouse
by Orthovia
Model # - OM-BLK (right)

The OrthoMouse is designed to put your hand in a neutral position. The sensor is near the 'top' or tip of the mouse, directly below your fingertips, making the act of targeting and positioning the cursor a direct extension of your fingers (much like writing).

In order to accommodate the various hand sizes, the OrthoMouse comes with several slide-on attachments at the base and top of the mouse to accommodate different hand sizes and methods of use. This ensures an increased sense of tactility and confidence in cursor positioning, resulting in a very small learning curve. This mouse is ideally suited for anyone who is seeking a sense of precision and high tactile feedback including graphics designers and gamers.

AirO2Bic Mouse (formerly known as Quill Mouse)
by Designer Appliances
Model # - 0090-0020 (right, onyx colour)
Model # - 0270-0020 (left, onyx colour)

The idea of the AirO2Bic is to immobilize your wrist and force you to use your upper arm muscles exclusively to move the mouse. To use this mouse properly you need a minimum of a 10" x 12" (25.4 cm x 30.5 cm) mousing area.

This product is available in both left and right handed models in onyx (black). The optional Nib software provides an auto-click feature, eliminating the need to 'click' the mouse, which is quite practical for web surfing and other non-cursor dependent tasks. The Nib software is $55 when purchased with this mouse and this bundle is called the Virtually Hands Free Mousing System. The Nib software is also available for $80 when purchased by itself.

Rockstick Mouse
by Microtouch
Model # - RS1201M (small/medium)
Model # - RS1201L (large)

The Rockstick Mouse offers an alternative method of generating mouse clicks. Instead of clicking a button, the user rocks the 'stick' portion of the mouse (tilting it slightly to the left for a left click, and to the right for a right click). This makes this mouse a potentially good alternative for individuals with trigger finger, arthritis, or anyone who has difficulty clicking.

The base of the mouse supports the hand and provides control of the mouse without the need to 'grip' the mouse. The vertical orientation of the Rockstick also eliminates pronation, the palm down position.

At the top of the stick is a vertical scroll wheel which can be clicked to generate middle clicks. The Rockstick Mouse comes in two sizes, a Small/Medium size and a Large size, and is corded.
