Keyboard Arms and Trays

Keyboard arms, that attach to a desk, are an effective ergonomic accommodation. Different arms offer different degrees of adjustment, including in/out (from the desk), sit/stand, and pivot. Arms are a far cheaper way of giving keyboard adjustability when compared to replacing your desk with a desk that is adjustable in height, either electronically or hand-crank adjustable.

However, when considering a keyboard arm it is crucial to know if the desk can accommodate the tray. Please check the following before ordering a keyboard arm:

The arm is attached to the undersurface of the desk's desktop (using screws). Is the desktop made of material that can accept the keyboard arm screws?
The track in which the keyboard arm moves has a fixed length. This length is frequently 23", but in some cases can be as long as 28" or as short as 17". The depth of the undersurface of your desk's desktop must be deep enough to accommodate this length.
Is there any strapping or on the desk's desktop undersurface that will interfere with mounting the keyboard arm track? A clear run from the front edge to the back of the desk is ideal.
Keyboard arms are heavy. To install it helps to have an assistant who can hold the arm from above while you attach it to the underside of the desktop. The easiest way to install the arm is to turn the desk upside down.
If you have pedestals on either side of your desk, ensure there is adequate clearance between the pedestals to allow the keyboard tray to be stored under the desk.

When estimating the cost of a keyboard arm ensure that you include the cost of a keyboard tray. Trays are usually sold separate from the arm.

Maestro Low Profile Non-Lift and Lock Arm

This arm offers separate lever activated controls for height and tilt. It features a low profile design allowing for more clearance for the legs and knees. The standard 360° swivel is available for side to side movement and a 23" storage track ensures that when not in use the arm and tray are fully stored. ABS Plastic Low Profile Tray

This tray is composed of rigid 0.375" thick ABS Plastic, which offers a low profile worksurface which does not hang down (reducing space for your legs and knees). There is no 'lip' or 'rest' on the front of the keyboard. The 11" depth offers sufficient range of movement for most mice and also accommodates most specialty ergonomic keyboards. It is available in a range of widths (30", 27", 24", 22", 20" or 18") and all the trays are 11.0" deep with cutouts for cables in a 1" Keyboard Guard at the back of the tray. Extra-Deep ABS Plastic Low Profile Tray

This extra-deep tray can accommodate combinations of devices that would otherwise slightly protrude on the standard tray, for example, when using a central pointing device such as the RollerMouse Free or Mousetrapper Advance with the Kinesis Freestyle Solo keyboard. Available in a range of widths (30", 27", 24"), all the trays are 13.0" deep with cutouts for cables in a 1" Keyboard Guard at the back of the tray. Like the Standard ABS Plastic Low Profile Tray, the 30" tray accommodates keyboards, pointing device and a separate numeric keypad, the 24" and 27" inch tray is available when dictated by less available space in the workstation.
